What a USDOT number tells you

A USDOT number is the unique identifier the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration assigns to every motor carrier, broker, and freight forwarder operating in interstate commerce. Once a carrier has a DOT number, it links together every compliance filing, inspection, crash, and audit finding the agency has on record.

For a dispatcher vetting a carrier, an insurance agent underwriting a new account, or an owner-operator making sure their own house is in order, the DOT number is the key that unlocks all of it. The problem is that FMCSA spreads the data across at least four systems (SAFER, QCMobile, SMS, and the Licensing and Insurance database), and none of them are designed for quick visual scanning.

This lookup tool stitches those sources together. Type a number, get the full compliance picture — authority status, MCS-150 filing date and next due date, insurance on file and amount, BOC-3 process agent status, UCR registration, safety rating, and roadside out-of-service rate compared to the national average.

How to use the lookup

Enter the 6- to 8-digit USDOT number (no "US DOT" prefix needed) and press Check Status. Results load in under two seconds from live FMCSA data. If the carrier exists, you'll see a color-coded snapshot: green for items in good standing, yellow for items needing attention soon, red for items that have already lapsed or triggered enforcement.

If you're looking up your own carrier, take note of any yellow or red items — each one links to filing guidance and the typical fine amount if left unresolved. Small carriers routinely lose authority over a missed MCS-150 filing that could have been updated online in five minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is USDOT number lookup free?

Yes. FMCSA makes carrier compliance data public, and this tool surfaces it at no cost. There is no signup requirement for individual lookups. Daily automated monitoring is a paid service; one-time checks are always free.

What if the DOT number isn't found?

A "not found" result usually means the number was mistyped, the carrier was assigned a number but never activated it, or the record has been purged. Try removing leading zeros or verify the number on the carrier's cab card.

How current is the data?

Authority and census data come straight from FMCSA's live APIs and reflect filings made within the last 24 hours. Insurance data is refreshed daily. SMS/BASICs scores are updated monthly on FMCSA's schedule.

Can I look up multiple carriers at once?

The free tool is one at a time. Transport Comply's paid monitoring plans let you track multiple carriers on a dashboard with daily automated checks and email alerts when anything changes.
